We're Simon and Liz, aka The Lifestyle Pioneers. If you're seeking real-life experiences and practical advice for living off-grid, it’s time for us to get to know each other. We’re not about the shiny stuff, just honest insights and valuable tips to help you make the most of your adventures.
Right now, we're in the Warrumbungle National Park in outback NSW, wearing more layers than an onion, kicked back by the campfire, with our two young boys. But our adventure didn't start here.
Two years ago, we set off to escape the mundane and pursue a life less ordinary. We were sick of living for the weekends and asking for permission to have time off to go camping. So, we decided to pursue our passions and share the journey through our YouTube channel. Whether overlanding through the desert, hiking into a Kimberley gorge, snowboarding in the mountains or scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef, we’re all about spending quality time as a family. We created The Lifestyle Pioneers to share the reality and practical advice for living off-grid as we explore the expanses of the Australian continent in our off-road caravan.
These days, Simon is the minister of transport, chief drone pilot, video editor, a raving F1 fanatic, and living proof that you can get anywhere in a set of pluggers. Liz is head of logistics, and photography, the minister of Education, head chef, and she loves nothing more than a quiet moment, a good book, and a second cup of coffee.
The Lifestyle Pioneers isn't about glossy, picture-perfect moments. It's about getting your hands dirty, facing challenges head-on, and embracing the rawness of the great outdoors. Think remote outback adventures that require a practical mindset and a touch of resourcefulness. Trust us; the journey is just as rewarding as the destination.
Being self-reliant and trusting every bit of kit we own is essential, especially when travelling to remote regions. After two years and over 60,000 kilometres, we built our second off-road caravan home. Working with Titanium Caravans to customise it to our needs and accommodate a few new ideas, we recently picked up our new 19.6ft Hardcore. Smashing the conventions of how a caravan is built, together, we’ve built the ultimate luxury off-grid home. With inclusions such as a dishwasher, 3kg washer/dryer, desalination unit, fully electric cooking and the all-important coffee machine, we’re not roughing it anymore (at least not once we pull up at camp). With some clever additions to ensure we’ve got the power and water to run it all under almost any conditions, we can’t wait to explore the country in our new home!
Reliable and energy-efficient ways to cool down in the Aussie climate are necessary. Although we can run our air conditioning when off-grid, you can never have too many fans! After two years with Sirocco II fans in our previous caravan, including them in our new Titanium build was a no-brainer. They're practical and energy-efficient for keeping cool and come in handy to clear steam out of the caravan when cooking inside.
What are our plans for the future? We’re big advocates for keeping plans flexible, as anything can happen that makes you reassess. After waiting almost two years, we recently got the news that our 76 Series Toyota Land Cruiser has finally gone into production. We can't wait to share its transformation into the ultimate overlanding tourer. But it’s not going to just be for show. Next, we’re off to explore some of Australia's most isolated, rugged, and remote regions. We’re planning for months of red bull dust, deserts, gorges, and spinifex before making our way to the incredible Western Australian coast. We can’t wait to dive into the Ningaloo Reef and spend a few months exploring remote beach campsites.
